PORTRAITURE
Portraiture
My portraiture explores the people who leave an impression on us — friends, family, strangers, dreamers and eccentrics. Working across drawing, painting, carving and marquetry, I am less interested in creating a perfect likeness than in capturing character, presence and story.
Many of my portraits are inspired by the remarkable individuals I have encountered throughout my life; craftspeople, artists, travellers, musicians and kindred spirits whose lives have shaped my own. Through simple forms, expressive marks and carefully chosen materials, I seek to reveal something of the spirit that lies beneath the surface.
Marquetry in particular is an extraordinary way to explore portaiture. Hugh also explores life with CFS/Long Covid through his art.
Each portrait becomes both a likeness and a tribute — a celebration of individuality, memory and the extraordinary people who inhabit our world.
