Sculpture
I make sculptures in wood, cast materials and 3D-printed forms, moving between traditional craft and contemporary making.
Carving remains at the heart of my practice, but I’m equally interested in what can be created through mould-making, casting and digital fabrication. I use these different processes to make characters, creatures, objects and fragments of imagined worlds — often drawing on history, mythology, nature and the curious people and stories around me.
The work can be playful, strange or quietly unsettling, but it is always rooted in making things by hand and giving them a sense of character and history.
Below is Hughs limited edition Highwayman print. It was originally conceived as a public sculpture.
